Trekking through Big 12 country

Last week, we talked to Paul Derrick, who’s making his first trip to every Big 12 stadium this fall. Readers had plenty of sightseeing, food and nightlife recommendations for the 25-year-old journeyman from Houston. Here’s a sampling of what they had to say, but remember, Paul isn’t the only person allowed in these establishments. You might want to bookmark this post for your own visits through Big 12 country. I know I will.

Jack Gregory in Atlanta, Ga. wrote: there are plenty of places to eat in Waco, TX, but I'll give a few classic options. first is Bush's Chicken, not far from the Floyd Casey Stadium - terrific fried chicken and sweet tea. Second is the Elite Cafe - Elvis enjoyed eating here. third is Cricket's - more of a college spot, but the food is good and a great beer menu. I hope this helps!

Thomas Nicholson in Boulder, Colo. writes: When Paul visits Boulder for the Georgia game, he needs to go to the Pearl Street Stampede on Friday night, 7 pm, before the game. the band and the football team parade down the strip-mall starting at the Boulder court house. It’s a great pep rally and the street is filled with great restaurants for some post-rally dinner. the band then visits every restaurant as well! GO BUFFS!

Ryan Hill in Indianola, Iowa writes: Paul has to check out Hickory Park in Ames on September 2nd. Heaping portions of hickory smoked meats and an unbeatable dessert menu is a must-see and must-eat!

Kevin in Sugar Land, Texas writes: David, I've been to all 12 stadiums and been to a party or two in the towns as well. when Paul is in Lawrence for a game there is nothing better than Lunch at the Wheel and post-game party at the Hawk.

James in Alexandria, Va. writes: Manhattan is known just for Aggieville, but there are a couple of great places to eat around town. anything on the menu at the so Long Saloon is great but the Chipotle Raspberry and Black Bean Dip and Crank it up and Head South burger are both amazing. if you like micro brews, head to the little Apple Brewery for a great steak and pint. Both are must haves whenever I'm in town.

Derek Zimmerschied in Kansas City writes: When in Columbia, look up Shakespeare's or McNally's for pizza and beers. Flat Branch is an exceptional small brewery, and would also be a good starting point for a night out. ending up at Campus Bar and Grill, Harpo's, or the Heildeberg rounds out a good evening after a ball game.

[Author’s note: As someone who’s spent a good amount of time in Columbia myself, I have to add Addison’s to that list. Everything is delicious, but their nachos are a staple. And I have to recommend an obligatory trip to Booche’s for at least one mini-burger. A full meal means three, and it’s the only place I go out of my way to visit literally every time I visit Columbia.]

John in Omaha, Neb. writes: When in Lincoln, Paul Derreck needs to check out the Sidetrack Bar where Joyce and Paul have entertained for over thirty years. A drunken singalong of raunchy spoofs, tv theme songs and husker fight songs. if only we knew the words.

Tristan in Idabel, Okla. writes: While in Stillwater for the Oklahoma State, Oklahoma game, you should make a few stops: Eating must: El Vaquero 5020 W. 6th Ave. Have a mucho mug (or two) for me. Pre-game must: Joe's cheese fries (cliche for a reason) and a coldie. Post-game must: the strip south of campus Morning after strip must: Aspen Coffee, 1908 N. Perkins Rd.

Caleb Roberts in Yukon, Okla. writes: Hey David, i read your interview with Paul and as an avid OU fan who hasnt missed a home game since '03 there are a couple places he needs to check out in Norman. 1) Campus Corner is always a fun pre-game place to hang out and get to know some Sooner fans. 2) Heisman park is an absolute must see. its located just east of the stadium and contains statues for four of OU's Heisman winners. Sam Bradford's isnt up yet. 3) if he can swing it, the Switzer center is amazing but I am not sure if he can get in there. Hope that helps!

Brandon Oliver in Bartlesville, Okla writes: I went to UT as an undergrad, he's got to check out Stubb's BBQ and the Hula Hut in Austin. if he's in the mood for some tacos, Torchy's Tacos are the best in town.

Cody M in Houston writes: On any Big 12 stadium tour, I recommend visiting Kyle Field at midnight before a game. You thought A&M was weird before? Just take a look at Midnight Yell and see what your opinion is after. As an Aggie, I couldn't be more proud of the event. There's a saying: "From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. From the inside looking out, you can't explain it." take a look from the inside.

Justin in Lubbock, Texas writes: I am a senior at Texas Tech. when in lubbock, Paul should check out the Buddy Holly Museum and walk around our campus. He should eat at either 50 Yardline Steak House, Jazz's (cajun), or grab a burger right outside the stadium at Spankys.
