Christianity on the menu at coffee house

OCEAN CITY -- Coffee served at a new gathering spot in downtown Ocean City is sweetened with this deal -- it's free.

Part of the new multi-denominational ministry called His Praise place, Holy Grounds coffee house at 102 Worcester St. also offers guests refreshments and contemporary Christian music at no charge.

"Get out and have a good time without having to go to a bar for entertainment. come and listen to some good Christian music. there is a need for youth to have some place to go on Friday and Saturday nights, and we're just one block off the Boardwalk," said Robert Canfield, who operates it.

His Praise place is under the direction of Canfield and the Revs. Rich Burkhard of Ocean Pines and Dean Perdue, pastor of Bishopville Charge. Sunday services are also offered.

"This is geared to visitors in that it is nondenominational. It is bathing suits allowed with a shirt over them. come in your flip-flops. It will just be a way to at least get a piece of what you have at home, the message, with family-oriented issues, but it doesn't get into 12-part things. We're looking for a hit-and-run congregation," Burkhard said. "You come in, in your bathing suit and cover-up, and have your beach mat outside, we remind you God is still the father of all and master of the beach and away you go."

The coffee house and open mic event fill an unmet need in the resort, Canfield said. Years ago when he came to the resort for senior week, his friends were drinking, but Canfield, who was involved with the church and not a drinker, spent time with Randy Hofman, known for Biblical sand sculptures on the Boardwalk.

"There could have been more for me to do in the evenings, but I hung out with my buddies and I was the designated driver. My college years should have been a little more like my high school years," he said, laughing. "But even at that time, I wanted more. this is an alternative to bars. Within the confines of the music there's a Christian message, a little message in the music, between the songs and things."
