One Cup Coffee Maker: A Holiday Shopper's Guide

The one cup coffee maker is the latest, most exciting innovation in the coffee world.

With the holiday season upon us, you may be thinking about purchasing a single serve machine for yourself, or as a gift. Here are five key points you should consider when buying a one cup coffee maker.

1) Price

You'll find a wide range of prices among single cup brewers.

You can get a simple machine such as Mr. Coffee Home Cafe for less than . Other, more elaborate machines, such as the Braun Tassimo Hot Beverage System, run around 0.

I suggest setting your budget from -0. This will get you a quality machine, with lots of features.

2) Appearance

Single serve coffee machines are some of the most attractive kitchen appliances out there. Why not get a model that will look fabulous standing on the kitchen counter top?

Senseo one cup coffee makers are known for being stylishly designed. They're available in white, black, blue, red, and chrome.

Most other one cup coffee makers are available in a black finish.

While you're looking at appearance, pay attention to the dimensions of the machine, too. Most single cup machines tend to be compact, but you'll want to make sure that it will fit under the kitchen cabinet, or wherever you or the gift recipient will likely store it.

3) Features

Pod coffee makers often include a bewildering array of features, but there are a few fundamental areas to consider.

Check out the capacity of the water reservoir. In general, look for a coffee maker that holds enough water to brew at least 5 cups of coffee. If it holds less than that, you'll have to refill the tank often, slowing down the brew cycle.

Examine the brew size options. If it brews only a 6oz cup, will this be sufficient? For versatility, look for machines that brew larger sizes.

Is there a brew temperature control? How about a programmable clock?

Can the single serve machine brew other hot beverages, such as tea, hot chocolate, espresso, and lattes? This is a very nice feature to have, so don't overlook it.

4) Ease of use

Get a coffee machine that offers little initial set up, and easy daily operation. To get your daily cup of coffee, the system should not be any more complicated than filling the water reservoir, adding a coffee pod, T-disc or K cup, positioning your mug on the drip tray, and pressing the start button.

5) Variety and availability of coffee pods

Look for a one cup coffee maker that offers a good selection of coffee pods that will be readily available.

For example, the Keurig kitchen brewer uses only their K Cups, but there are over 70 varieties of coffee, tea, and hot cocoa K Cups available.

Other single cup machines, like the Senseo and Melitta, can use any 62mm coffee pod, which is the industry standard. You can often find Senseo coffee pods in your local supermarket.

A one cup coffee maker is a wonderful holiday gift. With these shopping tips, you'll hopefully be prepared to make the best choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Gevalia coffee/tea pods in Senseo Pod Machine?
I just signed up for the ShareSenseo Pod Machine promotion. Will these Gevalia coffee pods I have work in this Senseo Pod Machine?

    • ANSWER:
They are all adaptable to any pod style coffee maker, then it is a matter of taste, I was a member of the Gevalia Coffee club back in the 1980's, I got a coffee maker with it, I love it and can find it here in Canada, I live in Toronto and we are very cosmopolitan so I have my choice of places, I like the dark morning roast, Swedish coffee like most Eurpoean style is a bit headier and stronger, but more flavourful than most North America brands.

Enjoy you will be very surprise how much nicer they are, and will most likely switching to them all the time.

  2. QUESTION:
Are there any hot chocolate pods for or compatible to the Senseo Single-Serve Coffee Machine?
I just bought a Senseo machine and I know that there are coffee, cappuccino, and tea pods for this machine. However, I LOVE hot chocolate and I was wondering if I would be able to make any with my new machine?

    • ANSWER:
Never as good! we have a coffee maker at work that does several sorts of coffee (no tea, but it does give you hot water to put the tea-bag in) and hot chocolate, but I definitely prefer the homemade stuff. Just put a mug of milk in the microwave (a minute or two til it's good and hot, depending on the "strength") and plunk in some dark chocolate and a sweetener (sugar or honey depending on what you like - I usually use honey before bedtime and sugar in daytime).

Don't do it with the Senseo even if you do find the pods!

Speaking of hot chocolate, I'm going to make me some! Thanks for reminding me!

"Hello, I'm Jo and I'm a chocoholic" LOL

  3. QUESTION:
Where can I buy hot chocolate pods for a Phillips Senseo coffee machine?
I have recently purchased a Phillips Senseo coffee machine and I was wondering where I could buy the hot chocolate pods for the machine. I had a look on the internet and I found websites that sell them but the shipping fees were absolutely horrendous. I am hoping one of the supermarkets such as Sainsburys, Asda or Tesco stock them. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
I've never seen them in stores. They do sell one Godiva Chocolate coffee pod. It has just the slightest chocolate taste and is quite nice.

Another option is buying one of the refillable pods and then buying any brand of coffee and using it in the pod. I just ordered one of these and looking forward to trying all the flavours I've missed out on since they don't make pods in those flavours for Senseo.

Question, though, why don't you just buy regular instant hot cocoa? There's some really nice ones out there and to make it you just microwave a mug of water and then add the mix. There's a particular yummy one I discovered last Christmas by Land o Lakes. They have little bits of chocolate in the mix and it's rich and chocolatey http://www.coffeerocket.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=LOLCCV

  4. QUESTION:
I am looking to buy a non pod coffee machine. Any recommendations?
I would like to buy a coffee machine which makes capucinno etc, but don't want to use pods, as they seem expensive. Anyone recommend something around the £100-£150 mark?

    • ANSWER:
I found this one just a few minutes ago for another asker. You will also need a grinder. Both are listed below and would be around 0 total, so around the £100-£150 mark total.
This is a fairly inexpensive espresso maker one that has a lot of really good reviews:

It makes better coffee with beans of course, but it also takes the pods, so if you are in a hurry or just not in the mood to grind beans, you can just pop in a pod. It does take about 15 minutes to heat up before you can draw a shot though.
And here is a burr grinder priced at around 0 with good reviews too (though it is a little noisy):

  5. QUESTION:
which company do you order your coffee pods from for keurig machine?
Keurig is forever out of a coffee I order. Is anyone happy with where they order from? Why do you use that particular company? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
